On Healing Oneself

I believe I will heal myself.  I truly believe Christ when he said that with faith the size of a mustard seed we will do the same things he did, and even greater.  I am in the process. I am trying to "get there", and in my trying I have learned much, and still I know nothing.  I feel like I did when I was learning to bowl.  One moment aware of the placement of my feet, then the way I was holding the ball, then how I was moving my foot, then how my arm was swinging, this far back? no, further? Start swinging forward? No, another fraction of a second..... Eventually I started bringing it all together more smoothly. I gained some control over the spin of the ball, and could sometimes succeed in hitting the sweet spot just between the 8 and 10 pin (is that right? It's been so long..) and knock over all the pins, without crossing the foul line. A strike!  In spiritual practice I am able to experience the all-encompassing love for all of creation/mankind, the peace that passes understanding, and so on. I am a Christian mystic.  I can reach the desirable state, and even maintain it for some time... alone, in my own space.  I find it extremely difficult to maintain my love and peace almost the moment I step outside my door, and start experiencing the imperfections of the world around me. Why does it have to be so freekin' cold out? Why didn't I make it to Abuquerque? Why does that neighbor have to be so obnoxious and inconsiderate?   I am only starting to remember to even try to forgive immediately, not judge, stay connected to the divine, etc.  Part of the problem is that I am fumbling my own way along with this.  It's like trying to figure out the best way to consistently succeed in bowling on one's own. It can be done, but will happen sooner and more surely with the guidance of those who figured it out before us.  Where will I find them?  I want to ask, so how does the true Christian behave when.... I don't know when to apply which principal.  I can ask "WWJD?" but often I don't know the answer.  So I pray, and I know I am forgiven for my errors.  When will I actually "get there" enough that I do manifest the miracles promised?

Happy Freakin New Year

I haven't written for a while, and that's because I have been basically feeling crappy on a reglar basis.  Tonite I am writing because I am feeling particularly crappy.  The reason for that is "peri-menopause" which, for the record, really SUCKS!  I have decided the reason "god" or "nature" or "evolution" invented this unmentionably gross and disturbing mess, with the full blown psychotic hormonal imbalance that accompanies it, is so that if any children remain at home who are really old enough to be out on their own, this will surely drive them away!  It will also reward the man who has stuck around long enough to still be with "his woman" for all the crap she had to put up with from him through the years.  (It is more likely to drive him into the arms of a younger woman, if he didn't already go there during his midlife crisis).  I am particularly pissed off about this now because I had 2 whole blissful months without "mother nature's gift" and thought I was through with this. It's been like this for what-2 years, now? (seems like 10) All of the woman I know my age (52) and older, and all the ones I know a few years younger than I, have been without this problem for years now. (My best- friend says hers just taper off and quietly disappear -the bitch)  Why am I still there?  Is it the price I pay for getting wrinkles and grey hair 10 years later than everyone else? Hey, how is that fair?  I got a "chest" later than everyone else.  Besides, I started my cycles at a normal 15 years old, and it was tough then, too.  One thing I am VERY EXTREMELY grateful for, is modern day feminine products.  I cannot imagine going through it like this during my grandmother's era, or earlier.  I don't even want to try to imagine it.  I am also grateful that I live alone so that I have been able to stay home, mostly in bed, with the 2 days of paralyzing emptiness and depression I felt, without the pressure of feeling like I was letting anyone down, or in direliction of duties, or needing to act all cute-and-wonderful for anyone.  I am sure it hasn't helped that the sun hasn't been able to poke so much as a ray through the thick grey cloud cover for at least 5 days in a row now (or longer, I've lost track). It has caused me to repeatedly question why I am still here in Minne-snowta, and not in Albuquerque where I wanted to be, and tried to get to. (see previous posts regarding my R.V. ripoff debacle) .  I am praying that God's answer is that I am meant to win the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway (which just happens to be located in my dream city).  Oh, look at the time!  It's been more than 24 hours since I last placed an entry. So, off I go. I am going to give God all the help I can.

The price of being weller than them

Lately I have been aware of a deep, abiding sadness that I was not able to identify.  It really came to the surface since Forbes, my Mom's husband, died.  I have cried a lot and it has felt like greiving, but not for him.  I have no particular feeling about his death for myself, but I have been very sad for my Mom.  She once expressed to  me that she could not imagine waking up without that precious face on the pillow beside her.  Now she must live it, and I am sad for her for that.  But this sadness is so much more than the compassion I feel for my mom.  I have been figuring out that it is something to do with how my family handles things like this.  It is never certain if I will even get a call, so I made sure I expressed how grateful and glad I am that I was notified.  (I did not get any notice when other various relatives died. I believe my Mom withholds on things like that to punish, and it did hurt. I think she would be satisfied to know that)  I dread the fallout from not being able to make it to his funeral.  I am certain it will be  fodder for the viscous gossip mill my younger siblings (and sister-in-law) seem to gain their sense of power from.  I understand how it works and the sick reason for it, and I hate it.  I hate it deeply and vehemently, and I hate the sense of vulnerability I feel just having been born into this lion's den.  All my life I have felt there wasn't room for me in this family.  I would like to go away and be forgotten.  But they won't forget,  They will always tear down and rip apart.  I  started wishing I'd never been born at about the age of 4 or 5.  I have one particular memory at about that age, and I knew I was revisiting a thought/feeling that I'd had before.
Maybe I always wished I'd never been born. I was sickly at birth, nearly died, and was diagnosed as a "failure to thrive" baby.  My mom's crazy myth about me is that I rejected her from the day I was born.  She told me that several times throughout my life. The last time I remember it was at a family campout in the presence of my sister Amy. I wonder if  Amy remembers it.  I doubt it, but I wish she would, because it would be nice to have someone corroborate it.  Depending on which day you ask her, my Mom may also corroborate it. Then again, it would be just like her to claim she never said such a thing. I have come to learn, over the years, that our mother has told me lots of things that she never told the others. For example, she told me many times, in an exasperated tone, " One of the best things I ever did was moving away".  I wish I'd had the courage to ask why she was saying that to me, but she is hypervigilently defensive, and I was afraid she would punish me for asking.  The couple times I ever did try to express (even very carefully, gently) a different point of view or wish for something to be different, she responded in a way that is best described as vicious, not just threatening to retaliate, but even a full year later carrying out the threat, and then throwing it in my face that she had, looking and sounding very self-satisfied.

Jeeze, she is a toxic person.  Like other abusers (i.e. control freaks) I have lived with, she acts one way in sight of others, and another way behind their backs, then she can deny and make it seem like I'm the crazy one.  And since my experience of her is so unlike the others', they think (and say) that the fault lies with me. I know they really believe it, too, because they are just as caught up in the addictive paradigm as she is.
Fortunately, I have come to understand what that is all about too, and why the need for the collaboration.  I have spent my life in pursuit of the truth,  understanding, and healing, and have learned about these particular dynamics in several good books on the subject.

I was fortunate to be born to another fate, and I have yet to figure out its purpose, but I suspect that somehow I am supposed to bring truth and healing to this family.  I just have not yet found the courage, or the means, or the time.  I leave it the hands of God, until I learn otherwise. What I have not yet figured out, is how to stop hurting about it, how to stop being vulnerable.  So I avoid them as much as possible, and put on my "best face" when dealing with them  is necessary.  As for my sadness, I think it is about letting go of the hope that my relationship with my mother will ever be different, and that I will ever get anything I need with her, even the most basic sense of safety.  What an aweful thing it is, to never have known what it feels like to be safe in the presence of my own mother.  Now I don't just feel sad; I feel sickened.

My sleep schedule, my theory, and a song I composed about coffee

This is such a strange disease, fibromyalgia.  It seems to control my sleep schedule.  I used be a morning person.  I loved having the world to myself at 6 a.m. with my cuppa-coffee, and my journal, and my Alanon book, soaking in the natural beauty.  Even younger than that (college) I used to pop out of bed like toast from a toaster, and simultaneously opened my eyes.  I was so happy to be alive and so excited to be in charge of my life, to see what the world had for me that day. I felt like I was on a great adventure. I lived by the saying:  "Early to bed, early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy, and wise."

Now I am the total opposite.  I cannot seem to force myself to fall asleep before 3 a.m., and I can't wake up before noon.  Today it was 4 a.m. 'til 1 p.m. My pain is lowest and my energy highest from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. and my brain is most active then. I have tried to change my sleep schedule, but it always goes back. When I do wake up it is slow going.  It is the time of my highest pain level and, while I keep feeling like I should be doing something constructive, I just can't.  It is a huge chore just to make my coffee.  I love this coffee maker though, because I can set it up the night before and wake up to fresh, hot motion-potion.

I have developed a theory about all of this.  I think it has to do with barometric pressure.  I need to research it more, but I bet the pressure drops at night.  I do know this: when the pressure is building up to a storm I always feel my highest pain level ever, then, like someone flipped a switch, I will suddenly feel an immense sense of relief.  Within seconds of that the first raindrop falls, or the first lightening flashes, an I say, "Oh, that explains it."  So this makes me wonder if I would find some relief or cure sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber (--like Michael Jackson did. I would bet he had fibromyalgia - undiagnosed) .

And  now, as promised,  THE COFFEE SONG!  I made this up for some neighbor girls I babysat.  To be authentic it must be sung in a very strong hillbilly accent.

Oh, I'm movin' slow this mornin'
I haven't had my drink,
The one that gits me goin'
and helps my brain to think.

I drink it in the mornin'
and sometimes through the day.
Gotta have my cuppa coffee
to send me on my wa-a-a-ay!

I just love a bit of silliness. Don't you?

Just coping today

My pain level is sky high.  Not the worst it's ever been, but getting up there.  I just gave in and took a T3 (codeine)  I am wondering if my pain is really worse these days, or is the Ultram no longer giving me the relief it did.  I am tending to think the first is true because I am aware that my stress level was extraordinarily high for an extended period of time this year, with little release or relief available.  I do what I can with what I have, particularly a lot of meditation, but also probably too much eating for comfort and distraction/entertaining myself.  I need a fun vacation.  But that's not going to happen.  Other ideas need to come to me. I guess I'll go meditate on that.

More of the same, and some new ATCs

Again today, I am in so much pain I have hardly been able to do anything.  Took the dog out a couple times, microwaved a meal, filled out forms for the new place I am hoping to move into.  I lost energy to scan them into the computer to send.  I got page one on the scanner bed.  The thought of running back and forth, lifting the top, turning and positioning pages, back to the computer, open the program, follow the buttons down, click on the right one, then click again, then again.  Back over to the scanner.... for each and every page. I  took a codeine. We'll see if that helps.  energy-low. stiffness-high.  bummed out about how much I want to do, and can't. I made 3 new ATC's last nigh that i am vey pleased with:

My rating scale

Today I am in lots of pain. I'm also pretty stiff, and fairly low energy.   I hate the 1-10 scale. It is hard to figure out where to say I am in relationship to the worst possible pain I can imagine (10).  And Fibro is much more than just pain.  The main components that interfere with my functioning are pain, stiffness, and energy.  (There are lots of other symptoms that are annoying.)  They seem to operate independently of one another.  I find this odd -- unexpected.  It is easier to rate pain in relationship to my functioning. At my worst I cannot get out of bed except to shuffle to the bathroom if absolutely necessary. I cannot open my medicine bottle, or turn on the computer, much less type. Worst of all, I can't make my coffee! - lol.  That's MY 10.  Sometimes my pain will be high, but my stiffness low, and my energy high, so that I am frustrated about feeling like I want to be active, but can't find anything to do that is comfortable, painwise.  But these are not such bad days because painkillers help me to function.  Sometimes my pain level is low, and my energy is high, but so is my stiffness, which also feels like I want to be active, but there is nothing to loosen the stiffness.  Exercises or stretching are a crap shoot. Sometimes they help, but more often, they flare me up.  Then I end up in bed for 1-3 more days.  I have read that this is common for fibromyalgics.  So if I am lower pain (usually it takes painkillers to get there) + high  energy + high stiffness, that's a good day to go to Barnes and Noble or use a scooter cart to grocery shop.  Occasionally, my stiffness is low enough I can shop for a while under my own steam.  It's hard to gauge.  There were times when I thought it would be okay to walk, and suddenly I find myself at the back of the store unable to take another step.
That's enough for now, but soon I will talk about the relationship to weather I have noticed, and my very very odd sleep schedule.  Meanwhile, here is some artwork Idid recently:
It's a mandala done with sparkly gel pens
